Sprint shutting down Voice CommandYou may or may not be aware of Sprint’s Voice Command service (and given Sprint’s recent subscriber exodus, you most likely don’t), but the No. 3 US wireless carrier has announced that it will be shutting down the server-based voice-dialing feature on July 1.

Sprint’s Voice Command offered Sprint Nextel customers the option to voice-dial contacts whose numbers were stored on a Voice Command server. Unfortunately, that means that all those contacts will be thrown into the ether when Sprint takes their Voice Command service offline on July 1, 2008. The carrier is advising current Voice Command customers to print out their contacts list for reference.

Of course, if you have a Sprint handset with voice-activated dialing already built-in, you’ll be good to go on your voice-dialing ways long after July 1. If not, just keep hitting that keypad.

No point in having an obsolite service when all new handsets have the feature built in

It is possible to download the Voice Command address book into a comma delimited file from the Sprint webpage. That way you can upload to other address books.

Voice command was never that great anyway…much like many similar services…still does not work enough to make it take over just dialing in most instances.
