Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has 65.7 million customers and during the month of February this year they’ve managed to send 20 billion text messages. That’s almost 305 SMS sent per user on average. Last year in June, somewhat smaller Verizon’s customer base (they did grow in the meantime) sent more than 10 billion text messages.
Commenting on the release, Verizon Wireless’ CMO said Mike Lanman: “The volume of text messages being sent and received by Verizon Wireless customers is growing exponentially. Whether it’s sports scores, news updates, the latest weather forecast, or the ‘joke of the day’, text messages are a tremendous way for anyone to stay on top of what’s happening in the world.”
“Not to mention all of the parents — and grandparents — keeping up with their kids, or kids texting each other throughout the day, text messaging is becoming an increasingly important way to communicate for people of all ages,” Lanman added.

MTV Networks is teaming up with mobile video destination mywaves to deliver MTVN’s first-ever free, ad-supported video entertainment on mobile phones. Under the agreement, select video clips from VH1, Spike, GameTrailers and additional MTVN brands will be available to mywaves users on the m.mywaves.com mobile website.
MTVN will provide frequently updated video clips, while on the other hand, mywaves is the platform provider. The two companies will collaborate to serve video ads on the mywaves platform, further extending MTVN’s advertising sales capabilities in mobile media.
VH1’s “On This Day in Music” is already available on mywaves and in the coming weeks, users will also be able to access Spike’s “30 Seconds of a Hot Chick,” and GameTrailers video reviews and trailers. More video from additional MTVN brands will be made available on mywaves later this year.
Right from the floor of CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas, the human powered search engine ChaCha is announcing the voice service. Simply dial 1-800-2-ChaCha (800-224-2242) ask (speak) any question, and get an answer sent to you via SMS. Every SMS capable handset will work, whether it’s a simple feature phone or a powerful smartphone.
In its release, ChaCha is emphasizing you can ask them whatever you want, including such questions as:
How much sodium is in a McDonald’s Big Mac?
What hotel in downtown Austin has a business center?
Who won the last Boston Marathon?
Where can I get the cheapest gas in Orlando, Florida?
Our friends from Emoze have been so busy during the Mobile World Congress (3GSM) in Barcelona that today at the CTIA, they have only an enhanced user interface to announce. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not blaming them at all. On the contrary, I’m glad to see them further improving their service now that both enterprise and what I call the consumer (POP3) editions have been released. From their release:
By using the new HTML interface, emoze users will see a more familiar, web-like view of their emails, including pictures, logos, layout designs, signatures and other visuals that most push email systems leave behind. This innovation from emoze, one of the only services providing this option, will offer ultra-friendly, PC-like messages by providing the facility to receive and view HTML coding.
It’s CTIA time and Plantronics is releasing the weird looking yet stylish headset called Discovery 925. Originally introduced at the Spring 2008 New York Fashion Week, the Plantronics Discovery 925 has already received rave reviews among fashion press, stylists and celebrities.
The unique design is marked with what the headset maker calls “VFrame” design and an eye-catching choice of colors. In addition, all the features you like about other higher-end Plantronics headsets are there, including the “AudioIQ” noise reduction and “QuickPair” Bluetooth pairing technology.
As for the availability, the Discovery 925 in Onyx Black is hitting the store shelves this month and will be available for $149.99, while the Alchemy Gold and Cerise Pink version are set for May release… More information is available on Plantronics’ website and from the press release which follows after the jump.
Filed under I just can’t make this stuff up; Nokia (NYSE: NOK) will be holding a press conference at CTIA in Las Vegas at 13:15 in what appears to be a box hanging from a crane, 180 feet off the ground.
