Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Home and Networks Mobility has just announced some significant milestones during Q108, including the shipment of 4m digital entertainment devices! In case you are wondering what digital entertainment devices inlcudes; digital cable set-top boxes, HDTV set-top boxes, DVR devices and IPTV devices.
Why is this important for Mobile? Well, apart from the fact it’s nice to see a story with Motorola (as a whole) doing so well, the keyword here is Convergence – most of the equipment sold will either have provision for future-proofing in terms of hardware, and/or software – that “future-proofing” is more about extending the product lifespan and adding functionality than bug-fixing – and how better to add functionality than provide connectivity, sync, exchance, and up/download with mobile devices.
With the plethora of Mobile devices carrying 2G/3G/WiFi/WiMAX/Bluetooth chips, the possibilities to have “Networks Mobility” has never been so great – and Moto are right in the driving seat to exploit this trend to the fullest.
