Hop-on launches $10 disposable GSM cellphone

The mobile space has come a long way in the past couple decades. So much so that Hop-on can make a profit from selling a $10 disposable mobile phone. Such a cheap, nay disposable, cellphone would have been unheard of just several years ago.

Hop-on, the disposable cellphone company that keeps popping up on our radar every now and again, has launched their Hop-on Hop 1800 to marry the convenience of voice-only cellular communications with disposable cheapness.

At just $10, the Hop 1800 offers users straight-forward mobile phone calling. There’s no display, no text messaging, and only supports dual-band GSM frequencies. Two variants of the disposable handset will be made available – one version will work on GSM frequencies in the 850Mhz and 1900Mhz bands (for US customers), while the other variant supports 900/1800Mhz frequencies for GSM duty in the rest of the world (Europe and Asia).

Interestingly, the bare-bones “anit-phone” offers users polyphonic ringtones and sports an Infineon (NYSE: IFX) chipset to ensure clear and crisp audio quality.
