iPhone 3G pricing and rate plan details for Rogers and FIDO

By Will Park on Thursday, June 19th, 2008 at 6:08 PM PST In Apple, Rogers, Rumors, iPhone

It’s all still rumors and hearsay until Canada’s Rogers (NYSE: RCI) and FIDO officially announce their iPhone 3G pricing structure, but that doesn’t mean this latest leak isn’t on the reals.

Howard Forums‘ prolific rumor-monger, i.Fido, has posted what could be an internal document detailing the pricing structure for the Canadian launch of the iPhone 3G on Rogers and FIDO. True to Jobs’s word that $199 would be the max price for the 8GBiphone 3G for Rogers iPhone 3G, Rogers and FIDO will be asking $199 for the 8GB iPhone 3G and $299 for the 16GB version on all new activations and qualified upgrades for existing 2 or 3-year agreements.

And, in a rather surprising move from Rogers, the “Consumer Data Plan” is priced the same as its AT&T (NYSE: T) counterpart – that’s $30 for those of you not keeping track at home – and will offer unlimited data, web, email access with Visual Voicemail to boot (when used with a voicemail service). Enterprise users looking to access an Exchange server will have to pop for the $45 “Enterprise Data Plan” that will offer the same unlimited data as the “consumer” plan, but also opens the doors to Exchange email.

3-year contracts and in-store activations on at most three iPhone 3G handsets are pretty much what we expected from Rogers and FIDO, no surprises there.

So, $199 for an 8GB iPhone 3G with a $30 unlimited data plan on top of your voice plan, sound good? Sounds good to us (except for that whole 3-year contract nonsense).

I’m hoping and praying this is true.

As for three year contracts, I really don’t mind at all. The fact is Im still going to have a cell phone in three years and unless one of the other carriers opens up to GSM service and starts producing some decent worldband phones, I’m always gonna be with rogers anyways. Plus, of all the carriers the offer the best pricing and structure for upgrades.

I know Im in with them, so if they want me to just put it on paper in exchange for hundreds of dollars off the initial price of a phone… No Complaints here!

The only way I could see this REALLY effecting anyone in Canada is if they were not stable in location, and may move out of Canada or to a rural area where rogers isn’t provided.

But for everyone else who lives in a city.. are you really going anywhere anyways?

  2. Queens says:

HAHAHA. Dream on iPhone-craving Rogers people.
The $30 data plan is ON TOP of existing voice calling plan, which is in the range of $40/month. So expect to pay $70/month if not MORE for this baby.. oh and don’t forget the $199 for the phone AND three year contract.
Steve Jobs is no fool people. Rogers isn’t too.

  3. Rory says:

    Is that really so bad??

Right off the bat the problem seems to be that everyone is treating this like a really cool cell phone.. it is mainstream, but the fact is it’s not just another new age cell phone. the iPhone is an ALL IN ONE hand held device.

And for any handheld device, $70 – $90 with UNLIMITED data isn’t all that unreasonable.. ESPECIALLY with rogers track record.

You get what you pay for. Rogers is a business.
I agree that through the years they have been unfair with data in comparison to what the US is getting, but People need to stop expecting something for nothing.

  4. Queens says:

It is not the holy grail of All-in-one hand helds. It has just been brainwashed into North Americans to see it so. There are plenty of other options out there if you care to do just a little research.

And if you think $70-$90 per month is reasonable you got to be kidding me. Unless you are able to say that you are 100% debt free and is living on your own, fully affording your own living with a house, car, bills, perhaps kids..can you say that this is another ‘reasonable expense’. We are already dealing with high Rogers cable and internet bills. Plus the rise in gas prices- I think its time to reconsider getting a fancy phone.

  5. Rory says:

    hmm maybe I am brainwashed.

I dunno.. I’ve used it, its amazing.. despite all the technicals and everything people have to say about it’s so called “bandwagon”.. the fact is it’s FUN.

Its great to use and I know people who have had it for a year and they still love it like they just got it.

Not only that I think considering how much we complain about cell prices and how he are tied to contracts by the corporate man (isn’t virgin no contracts? yet still all these complainers don’t use them) we should be embrassing apple. This is a company that forces cell carriers to create unlimited data plans, I mean think about cell phone carriers in the US three years ago compared to now.. still better then our prices, but point being before the iPhone there wasn’t unlimited anything. Now you have cell companies offering everything they have for under $100.

Having this thing in our country can only cause more competition, and price drops. rogers already cut their data on friday. not amazing but you have to admit.. BIG improvement.. and the phone isn’t even here yet!

And I don’t know any country that costs less then $70 a month to fully function an all in one device.. whatever the brand may be.

Your right, not everyone can afford it.. honestly not everyone can afford a $20 a month plan, but maybe if its really to much for you, you should just get a better job and pay off your debt before you go out buying the latest mobile device.

You can’t expect All in one devices (iPhone or not) for cell phone pricing.

You can be as mad as you want about the price of this and the price of that, but lashing out because someone else is more financially stable then you are is just lame.

Can’t afford it, then go to school and get a better job. Don’t blame rogers cause you can’t afford it.
Any Cell with more then call in and out is a toy, if you can’t afford it then do without.

  6. Andrew says:

If you have a cheap plan like I do ($20/mth), then the data plan isn’t so bad, you’re looking at $60-$70 for unlimited access.

  7. Will Park says:

That’s roughly what I pay per month with AT&T. But, I have a feeling I might be getting more minutes for my money :)

Still, I’d be more than willing to pay AT&T up to $100 for my current wireless minute allowance and unlimited data. I used to pay more than that just a couple years ago due to higher data costs.

  8. mike says:

Rory nicely put. I agree with you 100%. Funny how Qweens did not continue to reply

  9. ARE YOU NUTS says:

I think people paying $70 to $100 for this service are nuts. I have HTC Touch which was free on 3-year contract. While it’s not the iphone, it does most of what the iphone does. And I get unlimited email, unlimited web browsing, 200 minutes anytime, evenings/weekends from 6 pm, 100 Canadian long distance minutes, voice mail, call forwarding/waiting all for $30 plus taxes – no other fees – for a total of $33.60 per month. The speed of my phone is fine (although it could be better) so I think I will wait for better contract pricing on iphone before I jump. And I’m sure something even newer and better will come along in the meantime.

Who are you with – ARE YOU NUTS? That is an amazing plan!!!
