Despite being Verizon’s next big meal, Alltel has announced that it too will be rolling out an EVDO Rev. A data network to give data-hungry customers some high-speed wireless data as they wait for LTE to get real.

Alltel logoThe EVDO Rev. A network will give Alltel’s data speeds a boost from 400-700Kbps to 600Kbps-1.4Mbps on the downlink. Upstream speeds will be boosted to anywhere between 800Kbps and 1.8Mbps – up to 10 times faster on the upload side of the network. And to make sure Alltel customers can take full advantage of the coming high(er)-speed data network, Alltel is offering broadband data cards from Huawei and UTStarcom to complement the compatible EVDO Rev. A handsets already in their 3.5G stable.

“Rev. A is the next step in Alltel’s commitment to provide our customers with the fast wireless broadband service they have come to expect in their business and personal lives,” said Jeff Fox, chief operating officer of Alltel Wireless. “As our customers’ needs continue to grow, Alltel’s network is well-positioned to deliver higher speeds and greater capacity for years to come.”

We’re looking to a total of 18 Alltel markets to get the EVDO Rev. A treatment, including Charlotte, New Orleans, Phoenix and Tampa. But, Alltel is lookin gto cover 82% of its wireless footprint with 3.5G goodness by year’s end.

    Greetings!
Its now 2010 I’m still waiting for that so called highspeed internet access from Alltel
The township were I use my Alltel connection at is four miles
from the nearest Alltel tower service.
This is what I get: my connect speed is 115kbps, my throughput speed at best is 14.kbps, I’ve seen lower, like 3.4kbps. So where is the EVDO ?
Now I’ve heard all the excuses from those wonderful Alltel answer people, you know the ones that read a script answer but have no idea or care about your problem, because there in India……….Playing phone tech..
I pay good money for a service that at best is a little fast than dial-up!
In the fine print of the contract it basically states that your speed depense on how many people are connected, trafic that time of the day.
Ok, So this is what I did to improve my connection, I relocated my UM175 to a outside, center feed 36 inches dish,
allowing me to have a focal point at the antennas on the tower four miles away, line of sight communications,No trees, or buildings in the path.Next I had a custom cable made that has very low loss signal path between the UM175 and the computer( cables is rated at .25 DB loss at 5.8gigs per foot).
After the big expence , its still the same…115kbps connect,14.0kbps download at best!

    Thanks
