@mikemike -- Not true. The phones are locked to a specific carrier at the point of manufacture. An AT&T iPhone will not accept a foreign SIM card without going through an unlocking procedure. Will is correct that AT&T is trying to prevent its subsidy from running away. If AT&T is paying out roughly $100 per phone in subsidy shouldn't they do everything they can to protect that money? Forcing in-store activation is a legit way to do this.

The reason AT&T and Apple demand that these phones be activated in the stores is the fact that the country code isn't even on the phone when it comes out of the box...don't want people walking out with a wide open world phone...that's why. MM

You're totally wrong on the flat rate data plans. They were in the works at every major carrier long before the iPhone came out and Apple had no influence on that. Apple backed off its revenue share in Europe because the 2G i-phone didn't sell very well. More the 75% of phones sold in Europe are 3G capable and carriers were responding to that and not the i-Phone, which is just one in a long line of average selling phones (at least in Europe). Euro carriers were more interested in the 3G i-Phone because the onerous rev share restrictions were removed. If Apple had kept them, only the 2G iPhone sellers would have picked up the 3G version. The Euro networks were just smarter about avoiding the rev share.

You guys are bang-on with this.

There's another benefit to an iPhone-saturated world: Sooner or later everyone else will wake up and ask "How come I can't have unlimited data on MY mobile?"

Canada's GSM monopoly has already blinked, offering a pretty reasonable $30/300MB plan plan specifically for grey-market unlocked handsets.

I'm ready! But I'm afraid the Philippine carrier Globe Telecom will seriously rip-off its customers. Bastids.
