Apple’s Greg Joswiak says iPhone 3G getting turn-by-turn GPS navigation

iphone 3g tomtom GPS navigation softwareThat’s right. Turn-by-turn GPS navigation is coming to the iPhone. While David Pogue seems to believe that the iPhone 3G’s GPS hardware is incapable of doing turn-by-turn navigation, Apple’s own iPod and iPhone marketing director, Greg Joswiak, says that the iPhone 3G should be getting true-blue GPS navigation software in the near-term.

Apple’s iPhone team apparently took in to account a veritable grocery list of requested iPhone features, and found that turn-by-turn GPS navigation is a high-priority. Cut-and-paste functionality? Not so much - we probably won’t be seeing official cut/paste on the iPhone anytime soon. But, it’s not out of the question in the longer-term.

And, with GPS navigation software getting ironed out for the iPhone 3G, we’re sure the masses won’t mind having to wait for true cut-and-pates to hit the iPhone. Perhaps those “complicated issues” that Apple is working out for the GPS software is related to TomTom’s push to bring their nav application to the iPhone 3G.

Stay tuned. We’ll be keeping an ear to the ground on this one.

Update:
Apparently, Mr. Pogue’s belief that the Apple iPhone 3G GPS hardware wasn’t up to the task of tracking  GPS coordinates at turn-by-turn resolutions is rooted in a conversation he had with Apple’s iPhone tech-lead. Stay tuned for updates…

That’s great and all but what about MMS and video recording?

So-called tech expert David Pogue “seems to believe” it because he was TOLD THAT by Bob Borchers, Apple’s iPhone technical lead!

In a phone call on July 7, he told me, quite emphatically, that the iPhone will never do decent turn-by-turn navigation, because the GPS chip is too weak, and its placement not optimized for reception in a device designed primarily for other functions.

I have asked him and Joz to explain their conflicting reports, and am awaiting a reply.

I see, thanks for the clarification, David. I apologize if my comments came off a bit harsh.

I realy hate so called experts….

Have a look at what prattle David wrote….

“While so-called tech-expert David Pogue seems to believe that the iPhone 3G’s GPS hardware is incapable of doing turn-by-turn navigation”

      and ….

“In a phone call on July 7, he told me, quite emphatically, that the iPhone will never do decent turn-by-turn navigation”

Now correct me if I am wrong. But The apple tech said that “iPone will never do decent turn-by-turn navigation” but did not say that it was “incapable of doing turn-by-turn navigation” as david sujests….

No David you were not told that the iPhone is incapable of doing turn-by-turn navigation but that apple will never decent turn-by-turn navigation. (So the iPhone is capable of doing turn by turn navigation cut just not decently… there is a BIG diference)

So once again here is a perfect example of a self proclaimed expert twisting words to make him sound like he is the know all and end all….

While we all know that true turn-by-turn navigation will be a bit buggy at first, it will be a welcome addition to the iPhone (if it’s even possible). That, along with MMS and copy and paste functionality would be great software updates.

Unfortunately, I do not know whether video recording is a hardware or software fix, as I have seen third-party apps that can use the camera to record video. Hopefully this feature will be pushed out by Apple soon, whether it be software or hardware.
