iPhone 2.0.1 OS update problems
By Will Park on Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 at 5:45 PM PST In Announcements, Apple, iPhone, iPhone OS
The iPhone 2.0.1 OS promises to improve overall iPhone functionality, but there are reports coming in that indicate that some users are experiencing problems while trying to update their iPhones. Most notably, users updating their
iPhone to the iPhone 2.0.1 OS with Airplane Mode enabled (which turns off all communication radios) have been experiencing problems - some have ended up with iBricks in the process.
iPhone Atlas has put together a few hints that should ensure that your iPhone 2.0.1 OS update goes smoothly:
- Ensure Airplane Mode is disabled - in other words, make sure the Airplane Mode toggle switch is set to “OFF”
- Connect iPhone directly to USB port and avoid using a USB hub
- “Restore” any iPhones that fail to update correctly, as opposed to a simple “Update”
- Delete the iPhone 2.0.1 OS file as it may be corrupt and causing update problems
- Search for “.ipsw” and delete the appropriate file
- Search for “.ipsw” and delete the appropriate file
- Reinstall iTunes
- Put iPhone in to Recovery Mode and Restore
If you’ve been having problems updating your iPhone to iPhone 2.0.1 OS, sound off the comments!

iPhone 2.0.1 has unsuccessfully installed 12 times on my new iPhone 3G!
That’s ridiculous, sorry to hear that. Have you tried a Restore?
I finally broke down and called 1-800-MY-APPLE and they helped me solve the problem. Because so many people were downloading the update they thought mine had become corrupt. So, I had to create a new user account with admin priv and install update via itunes on that account. It worked, so we went back to my original Admin account and emptied out the Apple Software Updates folder under my home profile and then plugged the phone in again. It downloaded the software again and then did a successful sync with my master account so I could have my music and the rest of my stuff back. Apple Support was very friendly and stayed on the phone with me the whole time. A++ on the support.
I have the original iPhone & attemped to do the update last night… bad move… it errored out after doing the “Preparing iPhone for software update” for over 10 minutes. I hit okay to the error & then disconnected it & let it try to redo it. That semi-worked… it threw it into recovery mode. But, the recovery didnt work. After 30 minutes in the attempt, it looked like it finished but the window for the iPhone wouldnt switch off the “Set up system/restore” window. I rebooted the computer & powered off the iPhone & it still said the same thing when I started iTunes back up again. I went ahead and hit continue & let it try to restore again & 30 min later, I was back to the same spot. The phone works as a phone & I can get my emails. None of my apps work… they start to open & then just close back up again. I just tried deleting one game and redownloading that & it is working now, so that is a good sign… I’ll just do that to the rest of my apps (love the free games!!!)
Now, I just have to figure out a way to get the main page for the iPhone to appear correctly in iTunes.
Oh dear, i’ve tried to update my phone and now have an iBrick
So much for myth that Apple software is easy to use and maintain. Someone at Apple should loose their job over this fiasco! Haven’t they ever heard of testing!!! I’m this close to throwing it out the window going back to a Windows Mobile phone.
omg my iPhone is dead
Hi, I’ve updated my iphone 3G yesterday with the 2.0.1 software and since then, my bluetooth and Wifi are unavailable (light grey in the settings icon, like if there was no hardware). I restored 4 times the iphone and no difference. Could someone please give me some advice to undo this?
Thanks
Got some bad iPhone mojo goin’ on here as well… I can’t get the phone past the “update/restore” screen in iTunes. It works as a phone/email/browser, but I can’t get it to synch with iTunes to get all my music back. :/ Anyone got any more ideas/hints, or do I just call Apple tech support?
Hi, I accidentally put my iphone (unlocked) 3.0G into recovery mode. How do I remove it from the recovery mode? Anyone? HELP!!
Make sure any bricked iPhones are in DFU restore mode by holding down the power and home buttons simultaneously until iTunes recognizes the handset. Then restore normally.
If you are in recovery mode, you will have to restore the iPhone to get it out of recovery mode.
after updating, every app dowloaded from app store crashes seconds after starting up and music purchased on the phone has vanished. restore did nothing to fix the problem.
Have you tried the Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 jailbreak method? It’s a long shot, but who knows, it might work. Otherwise, visit your nearest Apple store and show them the problem. They’ll likely replace your iPhone 3G
BIG PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After updating the software to 2.0.1 (which was troublesome enough)
I can’t use any of the apps with out them crashing straight away.
I can use all the origional iPhone apps ok, but anything thats been downloaded won’t work at all.
Even tries a complete restore and still nothing.
Can anybody help?
Kris.
2.0.1 FAIL TO LOAD APPLICATIONS!!
Hi, i’m having the same problem than Camie and The Flaying Lampie, NON OF MY DOwnladed APPS WORK AFTER THE 2.0.1 UPDATE(included a game that I actually paid for)
That’s really annoying, I have reseted the phone several time but it don’t seems to be the solution
Anyone help please!=)
2.0.1 Crashed during installation with error code. Then try to recover, got another error code. Finally after 15 minutes, the recovery seemed to work.
BIG Problem. Everytime I try to connect iphone to iTunes, the software wants to restore from backup. I cannot get any further than this, so I restored. When iphone appears on iTunes, the software wants me to restore again. This just keeps on like a loop.
Do not upgrade your phone yet!! After several unsucessful attempts yesterday, I now have an iBrick. And I’m trying to wrap up the plans for my wedding this Saturday! As a first time Apple customer (I work for big blue) thanks Apple!!!
A quick, free, and friendly call to 1-800-MY-APPLE will fix your problem. Great Customer Service. I had the same problem but anytime I have a problem with Apple, they always help me over the phone and it is the best customer support I have ever used. I ran a customer service center in a past life and let me tell you, I could only dream of having my team be as good as Apple.
Regards,
I have the problem with running apps after the update too. Have completely restored, but nothing. What a waste of money - my Nokia played music and did email. Terrible to release software that stops a phone from working. Not impressed and don’t know what to do.
I just tried to update my original iphone with update 2.0.1 and as soon as it began updating an error message came up saying I needed to restart the update. When I tried to restart the update another error message came up saying their was a failure and I needed to restore my iphone. Long story short everything on my phone is gone and this is the second time this has happen to me! (Update 2.0 froze and erased everything off my phone as well) I really like Apple and this phone is amazing but I have to say so I am very dissapointed with Apple’s updates.
Had the same issue with the airplane mode on. Just dial some emergency number and it will ask you to disable airplane mode. Then simply reconnect and cancel the automatic sync. It will leave your iPhone displayed under devices on the side but not show anything on the main screen. Simply right click on the iPhone under devices and restore to your last good backup and presto.
I tried to restore my iPhone again this morning and it worked perfectly. Only issue now is that apps only run for about 2-3 seconds and then they kicked me back out. I tried deleting them and reinstalling them but it still does it. I hope apple can fix this quick!
Same problems. Iphone is a brick. Upgraded to 2.0.1 and everything died. Tried upgrading several times and no luck. Tried with new itunes software, downloaded 2.0.1 again. Nothing. Then, went to “Genuis Bar” and they said my only option was to buy a new one or a refurb, both for $199. After spending $500 this is what I get? Even better, if I wanted 3G I would have to come back later as they are sold out. Yeah, they are “sold out.” I used to really love apple as a company. This is insane.
If you are at the genius bar, escalate it. Stay calm but ask to speak to a manager or the head genius. Explain your phones demise to that person, they can make exceptions for you. Or, call 1-800-MY-APPLE. I have a hard time believing that Apple would screw you over after hearing your situation. I do believe that one, tired, or pissed Genius can deny you a phone and screw you. Just go above him/her - respectively.
For the people with Apps that will not run after the update to 2.0.3 - what I did was delete and reinstall via the app store, just one app and then the other worked ….
Very Strange ….
Joe
3G iPhone failed to update with 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 Same problem, same outcome. It required a full restore losing tunes and reenstating 100 unread emails.
c’mon Apple this is bad.
Sweet, 2.0.2, oh wait same freakin problems! In fact 2.0.1 was a good fix to the slow typing compared to what 2.0.2 is doing to me. The only good thing I am getting out of 2.0.2 is that GPS is almost pin pointing my position!!!!! GPS Turn-By-Turn on first gen iPhones? We can only hope.
HHHHHEEEEEELLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!
after an attempt of updating to 2.0.2 (from 2.0.1)
iphone is LOCKED in DFU (recovery mode) and wont recover with itunes
i think i am royally scr3w3d!!!
i hate apple for this update it screwed me over completely
bg
Fucking Apple shitheads. The update bricked my phone. I’d like to meet the dozy twats responsible for this cock-up!
