T-Mobile USA preparing multi-platform AppStore?

By Dusan Belic on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at 11:42 AM PST In Applications, Rumors, T-Mobile

T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USA is reportedly working on a multi-platform Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) AppStore kind of service. Apparently, the mobile application store will open its virtual doors this fall and will support virtually all platforms, “from upcoming Android to Java to Sidekick and Windows Mobile.”

T-Mobile USA preparing multi-platform AppStore? Not much is known at this stage and T-Mobile is naturally pretty quiet about it. T-Mobile’s director of Mobile Applications and Partner Programs, Venetia Espinoza, did say that they are working with the industry to “foster an open wireless services platform which will provide developers with the tools and information they need to make new, innovative experiences available to T-Mobile’s more than 31.5M customers.” She went on to add: “The devPartner Community site, which is in its alpha stage, is just a taste of what T-Mobile has in store and we encourage you to stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.”

We’re certainly seeing the potential here as I’m sure all those users could benefit from the third-party applications. On the other hand, the Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT) owned mobile operator could use some additional cash and a new service to push the usage of its upcoming 3G network.

We’re keeping our eyes and ears on the “street” and as soon as we find out something more, we’ll get back to you, k?
