Sprint taking @sprintpcs.com email offline

By Will Park on Thursday, August 14th, 2008 at 2:52 PM PST In Announcements, Services, Sprint

There are any number of things that a struggling wireless carrier can do to help cut costs, and shutting down oft-overlooked services is definitely one of the better moves. In that vein, Sprint (NYSE: S) Sprint logowill be shutting down its @sprintpcs.com email service on December 31. So, as of the last day of this year, Sprint will no longer be offering its customers the @sprintpcs.com email address that they most likely never even used.

Sprint has been doing quite well with their turn-around strategies, and we can’t say we’ll miss the @sprintpcs.com email address. Sprint is even providing their customers with instructions to migrate their email accounts to free services from Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Yahoo – a move that’s in line with the company’s renewed focus on customer service.

Sprint Mobile email will survive the cost-cutting move, so that’s a bit of good news.

Most likely never even used? I use email to SMS gateways many times a day to send myself weather reports and email alerts from my personal website. It saves my battery not having to fetch email over 3G or Edge. It gives me independence from third-party email services. And, best of all, I can implement this for free. I’m glad I dumped Sprint two years ago for unrelated issues.
