CCID: China to make 605 million mobile phones this year

According to the data released from China’s CCID Consulting, the production volumes of handsets in China are expected to top 605 million units in 2008 compared to the 550 million units produced in 2007.
About 400 million units (66%) of the total number will be exported to overseas markets, while the remaining 205 million units will be sold in the domestic market.
During the H1 2008, Chinese handset makers made 279 million mobile phones, with the world’s top-five vendors (Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Samsung, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) and LG) accounting for 65% of total production, down from the 70-80% recorded in the past two years.
In the other news, sales of handsets in China reached 96.4 million units in the January-June period of this year — up 17.5% from the same period of last year.
