And an even more interesting note: the prices and accompanying service plans you mention above give you fully UNLOCKED iPhone (for 72 hours it took to have my number transferred over to Singtel from my previous carrier, my iphone worked with my previous carrier's sim card flawlessly) just to correct your story, the 3G iPhone in Singapore comes with the iTunes Store application installed. or at least mine did.
