LG aiming to be Top 3 handset vendor by 2010

LG Electronics is aiming to take out Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and grab 3rd place in the handset vendor rankings, within the next few years. In percentage terms, that means stepping up from a market share of about 9%, to somewhere in the region of 15% (if everything else were to remain constant).
The plan, which was outlined by the President of LG’s mobile communications division in an interview with the FT, includes not only grabbing 3rd by 2010, but eventually overhauling Nokia (NYSE: NOK)!
Last month, the company announced that it had sold 7 million touch-screen based mobile phones by the end of the second quarter on this year. This comes just five quarters after LG launched its first full touchscreen handset, the Prada Phone by LG.
What is it with Handset Vendors and their obsession with placings? First ZTE, and now LG! Next it will be Nokia saying they want the lion’s share of the market - oh wait, they already have that….
