O2 do SIM-only tariff at great price – but what do you prefer?

By Ben Robinson on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 at 2:45 PM PST In Financial/Corporate News, O2, UK Retail

o O2 do SIM only tariff at great price but what do you prefer?

O2 are currently advertising a SIM-only deal (which they call “simplicity”) on their website, which is £20/month, and includes 600 mins/unlimited texts. If that wasn’t enough, there isn’t a contract tie-in either. Obviously the deal isn’t unique as other Operators have this offering, but in a more general sense, I’d like to “open a question to the floor” if I may, with the IntoMobile readers….

Do you prefer a higher price, locked-in, contract period WITH a Mobile Device of your choosing, or, do you prefer the pretty much contract-less approach with the SIM-only deals being offered?

If you have a strong opinion on this (and I am sure our readers will!), then let us know by dropping a comment! If enough people respond, we’ll revisit the issue and see whether the lure of a new handset is enough to get you to tie-in to a (typically) 18 month contract at a higher monthly rate…..

I vastly prefer the SIM-only approach. It’s cheaper month by month, which is the biggest advantage. And I get a new phone when I want, not every 18 months when my operator decides they’ll permit me to have a new one. My current phone might last me two years if I’m nice to it. But I won’t lose out on anything if I decide to buy a new one tomorrow. On contract, I would either have to pay over the odds for an early upgrade, or carry on paying more every month for a phone I was no longer using.

I have a new sim only contract and the its saving me money as its much better value for money. I compared the different tariffs using this website http://www.simonlycontracts.co.uk/ which was really useful as it compares all the different plans by price and network.

I work for a well known high street mobile phone company and we have seen sim only increase dramtically over normal contracts. I have one myself and found that http://www.SimOnlyDeals.co.uk is a great start to find one as it list and compares them all. I found 100 extra mins than i thought i could get through it

I am working overseas and require a pre paid sim card only so that I can manage the calls to and from with minimal cost as this is a temporary situation. Can I have a Sim Card only with a value of Ten pounds that is replenished on line when it runs low. Can it be sent to my overseas address

Another Sim Only store in Europe: http://www.simonly.eu/uk/
They really know what they are doing and have good customer support.

  7. Sim Only says:

Sim only is better, because when you buy the contract with a free phone the phone in fact won’t be free. You will pay for it, so better choose low monthly bills and buy a new phone or keep your current mobile phone.

  8. SIM Monthly says:

The money you can save with sim only contracts more than makes up for the handset. With the money saved, you could quite easily get a phone from eBay or whatever. The best part of SIM deals is the 30 day rolling contract. No need to be tied down like a dog to 12 or 18 months..

  9. sim only says:

There are lots of sim only comparison sites out there. Along with the ones mentioned above there is also http://www.simonlycontractdeals.co.uk/ which is pretty good.

  10. O2 Simonly says:

You might not want to forget the easy to use http://www.bestsimonly.co.uk/ which gives quite a complete overview of sim only deals.

  11. Definitely prefer the SIM only option, after several years of 12 month contracts & frustrating experiences with expensive charges when going over limits, SIM only is a stress free alternative!

I think SIM only will grow in popularity as it offers better value of money over standard PAYG but better flexibility than a standard contract.

  12. The SIM Only market is very competitive and will only get more and more competitive as the popularity of SIM Only accelerates.

  13. There has been a sharp decline in pay as you go users due to the SIM Only. Its just better value for money.
