UK carrier Velocity Mobile has recently broken into the smartphone scene with a rather slick looking device, the velocity103. Wait, is that a trackball? Hmm… Check out their upcoming velocity111, coming up in Q3… I think we can see where these guys got some of their inspiration, no? Cling as I may to BlackBerry fanboyism, these are actually some heavy-duty devices that stand on their own very nicely. The velocity103 features:
- Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
- Qualcomm Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) MSM7201™ chipset
- GSM/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900
- UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA 850, 1900, 2100
- 640×480 VGA touch screen
- 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM
- Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS
- 2.0 megapixel camera, 0.3 megapixel videoconferencing camera
- TV/VGA out
- MicroSD expansion slot
Pretty dang nice on the whole, and available for preoder from Expansys for $499.99, shipping sometime later this month.

In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement.
With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer. At IntoMobile, you can count on his posts being even-handed, well-informed and thought-out.
