Pay-As-You-Go iPhone Rumors
By James Falconer on Sunday, September 14th, 2008 at 8:51 PM PST In AT&T, Apple, iPhone
Reports are bounding around that the iPhone 3G is compatible and operable on AT&T (NYSE: T)’s Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) plans. Erica Sadun of TUAW reportedly tried putting a PAYG SIM into a 3G (with data package) and the thing worked fine. The iPhone in question was activated on AT&T, but it wasn’t unlocked, jailbroken or anything else.
Interesting little problem for AT&T and Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) here if this is indeed true. Has anyone else out there tried a PAYG SIM in the iPhone 3G?

Yep.
Pay-G data plans are no different than the post paid data plans.
iPhones work with ANY AT&T data plan (data connect, pda, media net, blackberry.)
They all have the standard APN wap.cingular
However, visual voice mail will only work with iPhone data plans (post paid.)
Did you know you can also use PayG data in a laptop card?
Now, just because it works, doesn’t mean AT&T will sell it as a pre-paid phone any time soon. You’ll still have to buy it on a post-paid contract and have it activated. Once activated it’ll work on the PayG.
Or get someone with an AT&T iPhone contract to buy you one at “Full price” ($400/$500.) and you can use it on pay as you go.
I also read somewhere you can use the iPhone on Verizon after doing some tinkering - is that true?
The reason the other AT&T SIM cards work is the “lock” is looking for a network identifier from the SIM. The network identifier (PLMN code) is the same for all AT&T (or any other carrier’s) SIMs. As long as you are using a SIM from the same network you purchased the iPhone from, you should be able to use any SIM.
@Sonia - Verizon uses CDMA and AT&T uses GSM, so you can’t make the iPhone work on Verizon. Unless you mean by “a little tinkering” removing the GSM radio and replacing it with a CDMA radio. But that is definitely major tinkering.
Having the iphone on prepaid.
I love it, its like saying “hey look at me I’m cool I can afford the iphone and all the cool features (well kind of…)
Having an iPhone or any phone for that matter has nothing to do with “looking cool” or showing off “look what I can afford” for many people.
Hey, if I could find gasoline at $1.00 a gallon instead of $4.00 for my $45,000 car. I would do it. I have no shame paying less for the same thing.
So if I went into an AT&T store and bought an iPhone I could just tell them I have a SIM and I can put my Pay-As-You-Go SIM in the iPhone and it will work??? if i tell them that do i have to do anything else such as activate it or something???
No activation required… although AT&T does like you to call 611 and give them the EIME # of your new phone when you change phones with your PayGo sim but it is no required. But as far as walking into an AT&T store and buying an Iphone, it would be cheaper to get one on eBay and you have the opportunity of finding one that is already unlocked (which enables alot of extra features such as adding 3rd party apps like yahoo messenger, etc.)
ok I am sorry after doing a little research, you will need to deactivate and then reactivate the new pay as you go sim card using an application or feature on the iPhone called iASign… Here is a url with the 411: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/24/prepaid-data-packages-and-the-iphone/
