Sony Ericsson demos Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and Panel UI

HTC isn’t the only game in town when it comes to making Windows Mobile-based smartphones with amazingly high-resolution WVGA touchscreen displays. The Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) XPERIA X1 (ironically, made by HTC), has been at the top of our short-list of gotta-have smartphones sporting WVGA touchscreens. But, what good is that widescreen pixel-count if you can’t actually put eyes on the darn thing?

Well, Sony Ericsson sat down with inxperia.com to demonstrate the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 on video to show just how great the WVGA display really is. The demonstration video also walks us through the new Sony Ericsson Panel UI that lies atop the Window Mobile 6.1 Professional platform. In case you missed our coverage of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1’s Panel UI from CTIA SF 2008, Sony Ericsson envisions a future filled with Windows Mobile phones bearing instantly reconfigurable homescreens.

You see, the Panel UI, that has apparenty been the bane of Sony Ericsson’s development process with the XPERIA X1, boasts multiple tiles, or “Panels,” each with its own set of applications and instantly accessible web- and local-data. The idea is that power users will have different needs at different times of the day or year, and each “Panel” represents a different homescreen configuration from which to choose. At home, one vacation, in the office, on the road – you’ll likely demand different functions from your smartphone depending on what it is you’re currently doing. The Panel UI essentially allows the user to quickly switch between homescreen configurations by selecting the appropriate tile, or “Panel.” Web-data is pushed to the handset, allowing for instant-on access to the information that matters to you the most. What’s more, the Sony Ericsson Panel UI SDK allows Windows Mobile developers to custom-design their own Panel for users to download.
