iPhone 3G vs HTC Touch HD – UI vs Hardware
By Will Park on Thursday, September 18th, 2008 at 2:47 PM PST In Apple, Devices, HTC, Hottest Hardware, Photos, Windows Mobile, iPhone, iPhone OS
It was inevitable.
With a 3.8-inch WVGA display that completely dominates the entire front-face, and a form-factor that seems to at least have been inspired by the iPhone 3G, the HTC Touch HD was bound to be compared to the iPhone 3G. And, now we have side-by-side picture comparisons to see just how the iPhone 3G measures up against the new list-topper – the HTC Touch HD.
It goes without saying that the 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen takes the cake as the stand-out feature on the HTC Touch HD. Ironically, the gloriously enormous and high-resolution WVGA display takes away from the fact that the HTC Touch HD sports a 5 megapixel camera – which is a first for HTC. And, with GPS, WiFi, 3G (HSPA) data connectivity, and a spec-sheet that reads like an encyclopedia of smartphone features, the HTC Touch HD is destined to take the iPhone 3G on head-to-head this holiday shopping season.
The HTC Touch HD takes the slim silhouette and sleek lines made popular by the iPhone 3G and bumps up the feature-set to true HTC flagship-standards. The VGA displays on the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro are already brighter and crisper than the iPhone 3G (although, the iPhone 3G display does outperform in direct sunlight), so there’s no doubt that the massive 3.8-inch version of those same VGA touchscreens (stretched out to WVGA proportions) trump the iPhone 3G’s 3.5-inch display.
On the flip-side, we have the iPhone 3G’s more polished and intuitive UI. With multi-touch functionality in tow, the iPhone 3G continues to outshine the competition when it comes to the look, feel, and execution of the user interface – making for a far superior user experience. The iPhone 3G’s strength used to lie in its iPhone OS, the 3.5-inch multi-touch display, and its head-turning style. But, with HTC bringing an even larger 3.8-inch display with WVGA resolutions to the table, the iPhone 3G is relegated to fighting the good fight on UI-merits.
The iPhone 3G is no stranger to high-tech hardware assaults from other smartphone makers, but the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) handset did manage to keep the upper hand in the “looks” department. But, the HTC Touch HD is just as good looking; has a snazzier, more sensual WVGA display; and also packs a mightier hardware-punch. So, it comes down to a better UI or more advanced hardware. Which will you choose?

HTC is clearly the undisputed winner by virtue of the fact that the IPhone is not & has never been a true hand-held computer. It is a gadget…a good one at that, but a gadget.
In all fairness, it looks nifty, functions seamlessly as far as what it was designed for, but it is not even close to an actual computer. If apple ever comes out with a hand-held fully functional OS which runs more like a total computer, such as the Windows OS, we might have a debate.
As far as the Touch Pro is concerned, or the Pro II, that takes it to an even greater level of superiority over the IPhone. Fact is, you can’t compare a touch screen key pad to a hard key pad for docs, texting, email, etc. The best device will incorporate both touch screen & hard key, which IPhone doesn’t have.
I am surprised that apple didn’t come out originally with an actual hand-held computer running on an apple based OS rather than just a gadget for browsing, texting, viewing, etc. There is so much more to a computer, regardless of whether it is apple-based or MS based, than what the IPhone is, & Windows Mobile or the short lived Linux Zaurus hand-held have been the only 2 that have actually put one together in the hand-held category. Blackberry & Palm aren’t true all-encompassing systems as they have to integrate with Windows on a limited bases just to compete against Windows.
Where are all the aps you can find on a Mac lap or desk-tops that you cant find on the IPhone. The similarities exist between Windows laps & desks on the handhelds.
i have both of these phones , wanted badly to love touch , but sorry iphone still out shines by quite a bit , so much easier to use , feels better , camera , sorry have to forgive both cannot take either seriously , NO FLASH , do not understand why all boxes are not ticked. thanks no offence to anyone s preferance
On my phone (HTC Touch Pro) there are 3 things I do most often:
1- text/e-mail. Touch Pro has a keyboard
2- talk on the phone (all phones work fine)
3- listen to music/audiobooks
The feature that takes an iPhone off my list is the lack of stereo bluetooth. I love my bluetooth headphones, and I wouldn’t use a phone that didn’t support them.
The iphone ist able to play 3rd party application (jailbreaking)
and can play so many 3d High End Games, no Chance for Touch HD
Iphone ist still the KING !!
With Touch HD most Games look like Gameboy Color Games,
so for Gamers the Iphone remains Kings
With my Sprint Touch i can:
Make phone calls,
Watch movies and listen music (2TB via mapped drive from my media center),
COLD BOOT! and remote control all my home and work computers via WOL and terminal
services,
Make international (free) phone calls via voip,
Remote start my car,
View my security webcams and control my house lighting(x10),
Use my phone as remote for TV’s and sat. box
Cost: $19.95 from RadioShack and $57 + $15 data family plan (3 lines)
Anything can be done using Visual Studio Express(free) and few rainy nights
(USB cable required:)
Now iphone…. well…it looks nice…
So many of the remarks here are pathetic, childish, and pathetic. These are two similar products but with different focuses. By which ever one best suits your needs and or preferences and stop bitching about the other one or about the people that chose the other one. Grow up!
It’s all about market share, guys. Ummm… who’s selling the most phones? 1 billion downloads from the App Store in under 1 year from 80 countries worldwide! What other phone has as much market penetration and has done it in under 2 years? Uhhh… none, only the IPHONE 3G – End of story!

These two phones are not on the same level… its like comparing a man to a boy, an colour tv to black and white. an aeroplane to a spaceship
The only thing good about the i phone is its ui and its flashy… nothing else.
THE HD is on a totally different level thats why the HD costs £600 in uk and i phone 3g is £135. on avergae
ie 1 Touch HD = 4 i phones + a couple of big mac meals + change$$$.
I have HTC Touch HD with SPB mobile shell installed as UI. The combination of the hardware and software makes it far superior phone in my openion than Iphone 3GS or any other smartphone.
SPB UI is fantastic and only cost A$35/- in addition to the cost of the phone simply download it and install the CAB file.
EXTREEMLY Happy with never using Windows mobile ever which runs silently in the ackground and never have to interface with it.
Go for a superior experience with HTC HD, Facebook interface (download app from windows mobile site free), direct video upload to Utube, 5MP camera good pics, windows mobile office, sync emails with Outlook, push emails, Skype, TomTom navigation works like a charm, download free TV App and other Apps from Free App WinMo site and much much more than iphone could ever do..
I dont get why people hate iPhone so much…Its much better, first of all it has a “store” free or not you can get thousands of apps, let me see some HTC do that… It doesnt allow 3rd party programs? Which world do you live in? Jailbreak takes 1 minute to complete and your world is under your fingertips. Not only jailbreak brings out any app for free, you can CUSTOMISE already very friendly UI. Top that HTC. Apple is a classic, they dominated mp3s and now they are dominating cell phones live with it. No copy and paste? Really? The new iPhone has much more than just copying and pasting… 3G network like no other, if you live in a city, your 3G is outstanding… AT&T does have 3G dead zones tho…is that a problem?? NO the new iPhone can be used with any carrier Verizon or AT&T also sprint and other but those arent as good…
So think again, but I’m telling you, Apple has done it again they have created a phone no1 can resist, but who cant have it, hate on it..
For me, the best phone or PDA is the one that gives complete satisfaction to the users….. well i guess no need to xplain.. but if anyone insist, simple… whatever you want to do with ur phone, no limits, no stores, no jailbreaking, customize to however you want it to be… or even brek the phone and rearrange the parts inside (if possible, i mean simple mods), and there are still many things… and most especially, no MONOPOLY…
If HTC and other PDA’s can do what iphone can…… how about “Iphone,” can you do the same.. or just stucked in your style…
The iPhone sucks man.
Windows Mobile Rocks.
I think people who doesnt know anything about hardware and software go only by the looks of the iphone.
And people who know whats up always chose other phones, such as windows mobile and blackberries.
I am a web developer for a pretty big company, i hang out with alot of business people. None of them have an iphone, they all have either windows mobile devices or blackberries.
iPhone fan boys think like 5 year olds, if one kid ones something the rest does too.
Be smart, think about your decisions. Windows mobile will always be the way too go!
iPhone fan boys might think they have everything on their phone. but the fat is that they lack everything even a brain.
dudes! the iphone is a piece of shit very well promoted by u2 50 cent and many other. they just came up with bluetooth lol and they think they r all that. and yeah its good for kids who need music, a phone and texts only, oh and they have to download apps for everything… its the most retarded thing ever.
guys ok the iphone is better if you just want a phone with a good looking screen, ipod touch integrated inside, app store on demand, and great new feautures and it’s all simple. The htc fones win the meat on versatility but it’s justs gets too slow for may and lags up for me with all my mods on the Mogul. I will be getting my iphone soon! Plus, I don’t have time to do it anymore with Jazz Band, School, Band, Basketball, there’s just no way to sit there on my computer flashing the ROMS and modding it every day. If you got time then HTC wins hands down but I need the iphone! Each phone has its own purpose which many people don’t understand ONE FRICKEN PHONE CANNOT DO IT ALL! PICK AND CHOOSE PEOPLE! Gosh I mean seriously one fone cannot top all others off otherwise it will be a “brick” in your pocket and there will be so many fricken features that you screamed to Apple and hTC that your head will spin around in circles and fall off. You probably couldn’t even make a phone call in under a minute going through all off the bogged down features you’ve spent hours creating in your bedroom. GUYS SERIOUSLY! If you don’t got time Iphone’s yours! If you got a lot a motivation HD and Pro 2 Kicks the Iphone’s rear. For me I’m done customizing my phone. I WANT IT PLAIN AND SIMPLE: IPHONE!
