T-Mobile throttling 3G data speeds after 1GB soft-cap

We’re not surprised to hear that T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) is enforcing a 1GB soft-cap on 3G data transfers. Afterall, big-dog carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint have all jumped on-board the bandwidth throttling train – it makes sense for T-Mobile to keep as much of their 3G pipeline as traffic-free as possible. It’s not something we like hearing, but soft-caps on data transfers keep those few customers looking to take advantage of unlimited data plans with P2P transfers and streaming video, ruining the party for the rest of us.
T-Mobile states in their legal disclaimer that reserves T-Mobile’s right to choke a user’s 3G downstream data-transfer speeds of 50Kbps “If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB.”
So, potential T-Mobile 3G customer would be wise to take heed and avoid any excessive video streaming or file-download habits using their T-Mobile 3G data plan. The only question is – will a 1GB soft-cap be sufficient for the power user?
