Japanese talked on mobiles for 1.899 billion hours during last year

So far we’ve published several articles dealing with impressive numbers from China. Sure the “world’s fastest growing economy” has more subscribers than whole of Europe, but what about its high-tech island-neighbour?

Well, Japanese are known to be quite tech savvy so we were not surprised to learn that they’ve spent 1.899 billion hours talking on their handsets during last year. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, that’s 4.5% increase from 2006 and the first time mobile phone usage surpassed calls made from landlines.

At the end of fiscal 2007, the number of mobile phone subscriptions was 102.72 million, a 6.2% increase from the previous period. At the same time, the number of landlines was 51.23 million, a 7.1% decrease year-on-year.
