The Poppy Appeal this year has a Mobile channel (powered by a company called Tanla Mobile), and is running the ‘Poppy Download’ service – where members of the public can make a donation using their mobile phones, in return for a poppy mobile wallpaper (thus mirroring the traditional process of donating some cash for a paper poppy to wear).

The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal is one of the best known and supported campaigns in the country. Its aim is to raise funds to support the Legion’s work in providing financial, social and emotional support to people who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. This year the Legion hopes to raise £32 million with its Poppy Appeal.

For the first time, The Royal British Legion is including a short-code number on their nationwide poster campaign, inviting people to show their support by texting ‘POPPY’ to 80848 to make a £1.50 donation. Alternatively, donations of up to £10 using Payforit (WAP) billing can be made by visiting the popular internet portals 3 and Vodafone, via www.poppy.org, which are supporting the campaign.

For those that don’t know, or haven’t heard of Tanla:

Tanla Mobile is a global provider of mobile commerce, mobile marketing, mobile entertainment and mobile internet solutions to the Telecommunications, Media and Digital Content industries. Tanla specialises in developing customised mobile applications, platforms and services for organisations who want to create a mobile strategy or channel.

Overall, a very worthwhile cause, and a great/convenient way to be able to give to it. Thanks to Liz for the heads-up on this story :-)

About The Author

Ben Robinson

Ben is a 10+ year veteran of the Mobile industry – starting his career when SMS was a still a relatively new concept for most people (!), he has now consulted on everything from bleeding-edge Mobile content, to the next-gen accessories you might view it on. As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas! He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to 'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device) isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question of why you continue to use it... His focus at IntoMobile is mainly on Mobile content, services, and infrastructure, particularly as regards the UK market – and with the occasional look at devices. Additionally, using his extensive experience in the industry, he will provide commentary on the industry at large, with regular (and hopefully thought-provoking) articles.
