My Location on Google Maps for BlackBerry improved with WiFi

If you happen to own a WiFi-enabled BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) you’ll want to install the latest version of Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps, which now adds WiFi signal to the “My Location” mix. The idea is to use wireless network’s signal along with signal from cellular towers to shrink that magical blue circle which shows you where you are — since the range of a WiFi access point is smaller than that of a cell phone tower, this should result in a much more accurate position. If you have a GPS-enabled device, this should help get your position more quickly on Google Maps.
WiFi-based location is available in many major cities around the world, though coverage and accuracy may vary. However, it is expected to improve over time as more people use it.
As you’ve probably figured out, initially this WiFi-based improvements are available for BlackBerry users only, but Google wowed to bring the same goodness to other mobile platforms in the near future…
