Taliban Orders Daytime Shutdown of Mobile Phone Networks

The Taliban have ordered mobile operators in Ghazni province, southwest of Kabul to shut down their networks during the daytime. They are concerned that the networks are being used to track the movements of Taliban fighters. I’m not surprised to hear this news. Earlier in the year they had ordered networks to shut down during the night… and with a new President about to be elected in the US, you can bet the new President will be gunning for the Taliban and specifically ‘you know who’ over in Afghanistan. In preparation, the Taliban are no doubt trying to be as safe and secure as they can.

Call me crazy, but I would think that if they were in fear of getting caught or tracked, they could simply turn off their cell devices?

At the moment there are around 2,000 mobile phone towers in the Afghanistan. The Taliban do attack the towers from time to time, but repairs are swift. It’s going to be an interesting next few months in the US. With Obama out to what appears to be a healthy lead, it looks like the US is heading in a new and positive direction… But we’ll see on election day.
