It seems Microsoft will be releasing Windows Mobile 6.5 before releasing version 7. Apparently, Motorola handset business’ CEO, Sanjay Jha, mentioned this in a recent interview.

“Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform.”

A PC Magazine story states that a Motorola smartphone sporting Windows Mobile 6.5 will be released in H2 2009.

As a sidenote, during Microsoft’s Sinergija conference in Novi Sad, Serbia, the company’s representative also mentioned that the next version of Windows Mobile will be 6.x, rather than 7. He added that at the moment they are not sure whether it will be called “6.2″ or “6.5.”

We’ll certainly have more to add on this in the future. Stay tuned in the meantime.
