To mark the start of the prestigious Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker along with folks from WTA organized a special match, featuring tennis beauties Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva.

The Serb and the Russian played on a replica tennis court, specifically built for the occasion. The match took place on Palm Island in the middle of Doha Bay in the Arabian Gulf.

Commenting on the occasion, Sony Ericsson’s Aldo Liguori said: “We are committed to innovating and introducing unique activities in women’s tennis to continue to attract new fans and broaden the appeal of the sport on a global basis. It has been a great year for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and I hope through events like this we can attract more fans to the Tour and the exciting prospect of the 2009 season.”

All I can say is that Sony Ericsson’s marketing rocks… A shore video from the match follows after the jump.

I think a great example of a company that really dropped the ball on marketing to women is VW, with its Brooke Shields “Routan Boom” campaign.

That the campaign takes a mocking and disdainful tone toward women, and especially mothers, isn’t what’s surprising—lots of ads do that. It’s that they’re doing it in an ad for a MINIVAN. You don’t have to be a marketing genius to know who the prime minivan market is.

Seriously, watch the ads and tell me you disagree with me: Routan Bust
