Internet Explorer Mobile 6 emulator now available – IE 6-on-6 inches closer to market

Touted as Windows Mobile’s answer to the growing market of mobile web browsers delivering desktop-like browsing experiences, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has been promising to release a revamped Internet Explorer Mobile (previously known as Pocket Internet Explorer) for Windows Mobile 6.1 that is based on the same underlying code that powers the desktop version of Internet Explorer. The new Internet Explorer Mobile 6, casually referred to by Microsoft as “6-on-6,” has slowly been materializing through screenshot leaks and is expected to integrate a full-HTML browser into Windows Mobile 6.1.

In what could be the final preparatory step leading up to the actual launch of Internet Explorer Mobile 6, Microsoft has released a new IE Mobile 6 emulator to help developers familiarize themselves with the re-tooled Windows Mobile web browser.

Internet Explorer Mobile 6 will give Windows Mobile 6.1 users more choice in the mobile browser market, and will likely come bundled with the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.

Here’s what to expect in the new Internet Explorer Mobile 6:

• Improved fidelity (support for full fidelity desktop rendering)
• Layout fixes to accommodate a mobile screen (text wrap)
• Enhanced Script and AJAX support  (Jscript v5.7 from Internet Explorer
• Improved multimedia experience (Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 for Adobe Flash content)
• Deeper integration with search
• Enhanced cursor navigation model
• Touch and gesture support – pan support
• Multiple zoom levels
• Easy switching between mobile / desktop versions of sites by specifying UA strings.
