I know SureType when I see it, and that’s definitely what’s going on with Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s work-in-progress Wahoo, a flip phone due to hit up AT&T in the near future. Preliminary specs include:

  • Quad-band GSM
  • Dual-band HSDPA (850/1900 MHz)
  • A-GPS
  • 128 x 160 1.36″ external display, 240 x 320 2.2″ internal display
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Bluetooth with A2DP support
  • Four hours talk time
  • 2.5mm headphone jack
  • microSD memory card slot

To be totally honest, this looks like a way sexier version of the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Pearl Flip, and by offering GPS, Nokia has beat RIM to launching the BlackBerry 8210 down the line. The half-QWERTY layout will appeal to heavy texters as well as light e-mail users who still dig the flip form factor. Hopefully RIM  will take a cue from the Wahoo for the next flip they release, and make something a little less chubby.

“Nokia flashes its Wahoo to the world” Clever. Very clever.

While this phone is nothing spectacular spec wise (ooh, alliteration), it is pretty cute and you’re right, with that added GPS it just one-up’d the BB Flip. And half QWERTY isn’t half bad.

Well done, Nokia, you’ve pulled off a year of decent surprises beyond neat candy bar phones and mp3 phones – you’re playing with the big boys now :)
