Sony Ericsson C905: the five-minute fiddle

Sony Ericsson C905

I also had my hands on a C905 the other day for five minutes, and below you can also find out what I thought of it. The point of these comments are to give you a flavour of what might enamour or disappoint you if were to have same time to play with the device – and thus get a view on whether it’s buy-worthy!

build quality – superb – I am impressed. Only reservation is on the slide mechanism for the camera, as these have a history of opening in peoples pockets, and draining the battery!

key layout – very good indeed – good response too

slide mechanism – clunky, in a very good way :-)

User interface – not really changed at all from K800i – nice, but you could argue needs an update

Camera – simply stunning!

option-finding complexity – very high – lots of layers of menus again :-(

Speed – quick to use, nice

media handling – this is an odd one – images are excellent, videos are really not good at all!!

So in summary, would I buy one? The major problem I have with this device is that the UI really isn’t evolved much, if any, from the three year old K800i. Come on SE, you have to keep wowing us, sitting on laurels does not make me buy a phone! But but but, the camera is back to being a revelation. I suspect a proper 8MP camera would take better pics, but the pics on here are still VERY good!

Overall rating: positive – I like!
Grade: A- (a few tweaks and it would be an A or A+!)

  1. frasercanada says:

    Have owned a k790 and k850i.

I am on my second c905 (first one had a bad non working vibrate. Was replaced by the seller @ no charge.

    First the cons:
    1. no front camera for video calling (TRUST ME.. THERE IS NO CAMERA THERE, I know i own one);that being said.. you can use the main camera for video calling, so be near a mirror if you wanna true video call.

    2. The speaker phone on both the k790 and the k850 OWNZORD.. but on the c905 SE figured they would put the microphone right next to the load speaker… DUH!

Thats it though.. the only complaints. The pros:

    1. Big clear scratch resistant screen.
    2. Loud clear speakerphone (at least on your end itll sound fine ;) see above)
    3. Amazing photos. I dont care what anyone says.. the photo AND the video quality are great for a CELL PHONE.
    4. Wifi AND gps? CAMMON!
    5. the keypad and the front buttons are all built well and as far as I can tell are going to last your average 2 to 3 years.. who cares after that.. new phone.
    6. 1 to 2 days battery life maybe more if you turn off unused radios ie bt wifi gps etc.
    7. It feels good. I can’t describe it differently.. it really really feels good. sturdy heavy (a good heavy) … all around.. good.

ANd finally those of you who like myself HATE leaving their precious electronics go ‘unprotected’ lol So far the only case (worth purchasing) that I can find is the one by krussel. if you dont need to dial/text you can use the phone w/o taking it out of the case. there is one otherone i saw on eby that is similar, but offers less protection, and looks cheap.. again trust me the krussel is your best bet for now. yay for the peeps that develop aluminium cases hint hint. there’s also a black rubberiszed ‘crystal’ case that is okay if you dont want the other mentioned cases.. but i wouldnt trust a six hun dollar phone to be saved by a 5 dollar piece of plastic.

    anyways I hope this helps.

SE has released an update adding youtube and smileshutter functionality to the phone adding even more sweetness to it.
