A leader in digital content innovation.... the BBC

Occasionally I like to write posts that take a wider view of the news – they might take in things that I have read directly (be it on printed media, or on the InterWeb), or they might be anecdotal comments that colleagues (both past and present) have made to me. At any rate, from time to time, this incoming information binds together in what can be considered a relatively logical mass – something I would consider to commit to a post as ‘commentary’

One such culmination of information occurred for me, when considering the BBC’s position as a content creator, producer, and broadcaster, I reached the conclusion that they are in fact exceedingly well-positioned in the Digital content space to make the most of it. And let’s look at some of the reasons why:

- Funding – masses available, thanks in no small part to the TV license fee in the UK! However, the BBC re-sells a lot of it’s content internationally, with great success – due to the fact that it’s considered to be a global leader in TV

- Expertise – there are LOTS of people at the BBC; but more importantly many of them have been there a while (generating a lot of intrinsic experience), and are very, very good at what they do. The thing with expertise is that you can’t just buy it in; a lot of it is grown organically – and the BBC has tons of this

- Technology – whilst the BBC might be known for it’s terrestrial channels, it’s also working very strongly in many other areas. It is a leader in ‘HD’, in New Media platforms (e.g. iPlayer), and is also strategically reviewing how it will position itself and grow in the New Digital age.

For all the flak that the BBC has incurred recently, and also over the last few years, what you can be relatively sure of is that there is a plan on how to rollout across multiple platforms, and what the content should (or should not) be on these platforms.

iPlayer is a runaway success, for a number of reasons – but the next place that it is going is on to MOBILE devices. Likewise further content and platform innovation will include those devices on which people are increasingly watching TV.

All of this means that for owners of Mobile Devices (wherever they may be in the world), whilst the BBC may not appear to be the quickest moving entity, it is definitely going to be a big, leading player in the new world of digital content – such an assured bet you won’t find in many places!

Ben – I agree BBC has done a great job with the iPlayer. I wish more American content producers would get in on the action. Now if the BBC could only get some new actors and not constantly recycle the same 10…
