G1 Auto-Rotation Coming Soon?

By James Falconer on Monday, December 1st, 2008 at 8:39 AM PST In Android, GPhone, HTC, T-Mobile

If you own a T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) G1, you certainly know that the screen orientation already changes from portrait to landscape when you slide out the keyboard. That said, the screen will not rotate when you simply turn the device in your hand… even though the accelerometer on-board is there to make this feature possible (you would think!?).

Good news is a hack…er… update is already being worked on that will rotate the screen for you. In the video above, you’ll notice that when the device is turned, the screen turns… Turn it back to its original orientation, and it turns back. Simple. But handy.

Apparently this feature is already claimed to be part of the SDK, so developers will simply need to unlock the new feature for their app. Stay tuned for more apps and games coming to the G1 with auto-rotation built in… But this all kind of makes me wonder why this wasn’t built-into the original Android OS in the first place?
