Chalk up another world’s first for LG. The South Korean cellphone manufacturer has announced that it has successfully tested the world’s first mobile phone LTE chip with impressive results.

The world’s first 3GPP LTE chip was designed for use in mobile applications like handsets and data cards. LG managed to pull down a maximum of 60Mbps on the downlink, with upstream data speeds peaking at 20Mbps. The LTE standard is capable of supporting 100Mbps data speeds on the downstream, with 50Mbps upload speeds, but we’re more than happy to see LG developing LTE chips with 60Mbps data speeds. In comparison to the fastest HSPA solutions on market today (7.2Mbps), LG’s 60Mbps speed limit is a significant improvement.
