Joel Comm Publishes App Store Sales-to-Rank Numbers for iFart Mobile

Joel Comm, founder of InfoMedia Inc. contacted me early this morning with some interesting news he wanted to share with the public… and in specific… to help app developers around the world.

Joel has developed a #1 application in the App Store. The app has only been around for a few weeks, and already the rankings and sales of the app are astonishing. A little side note here… while Joe’s numbers show him at number one, when I popped open the app store on my iPhone, he was currently #2 in Entertainment… Can you see what app he produced? That’s right, the ‘iFart Mobile’ app. Brilliant

Joel has made his sales-to-rank data public in hopes of helping developers an idea of how much money really can be made with a succesful app.

Here are the numbers. The app launched on December 12th, 2008… and the format below is date, units sold, overall ranking, and entertainment category ranking:

12/12 – 75 units – #70 entertainment
12/13 – 296 units – #16 entertainment
12/14 – 841 units – #76 overall, #8 entertainment
12/15 – 1510 units – #39 overall, #5 entertainment
12/16 – 1797 units – #22 overall, #3 entertainment
12/17 – 2836 units – #15 overall, #3 entertainment
12/18 – 3086 units – #10 overall, #3 entertainment
12/19 – 3117 units – #9 overall, #2 entertainment
12/20 – 5497 units, – #4 overall, #2 entertainment
12/21 – 9760 units – #2 overall, #1 entertainment
12/22 – 13274 units – #1 overall

This really got me thinking about how the $0.99 app is king. The price point is right. Everyone and their dog will download an app for 99 cents as long as it is appealing and has some sort of ‘hook’ to get that initial interest (and heck, a little bit of controversy doesn’t hurt either… as long as you can get it into the App Store in the first place!). The great thing about selling an app for 99 cents is the lack of disappointment on the backend, because if someone downloads it and doesn’t like it, ‘meh, it was only a dollar anyway!’.

Congrats to Joel and his team. Looks like they’re doing well. I’ll be waiting to hear more about new successes in the app store!
