wdtv Nice bit of convergence kit: Western Digital WDTV

Woah. This is a seriously nice bit of kit. Western Digital (those of hard drive fame) have gone all multimedia on us and produced a nice bit of AV kit which bridges a common issue in many households – how do I get stuff from my hard disk to the TV?

You plug the HD (there isn’t one inside) to the adapter, and then plug to the TV – as the unit supports up to 1080p, that’s potentially a niiiiiice picture!

There are some limitations on it apparently – the fact it won’t play DivX could be a deal breaker for some, as could the fact that it won’t read Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)-formatted hard disks. Likewise it doesn’t play nicely with the Fairplay DRM of Apple’s making.

The ace in the sleeve of this piece of convergence kit though is that it sells for under £100 – nearly 3x less than Apple’s higher-end Apple TV. OK you could argue no HD here, but even adding a GIGANTIC 1TB hard disk isn’t going to cost you more than £100 or so – still one-third cheaper!

Anyway, The Register has a really nice review of this, and you can find more on Western Digital’s site here. I just wish they would send me one to review!!
