Taiwan Consumers’ Federation requests Operators to lower charges

It’s no secret that the whole world is trying to save money, in the wake of the credit crunch – check out this news from Taiwan….
The Consumers’ Foundation in Taiwan is urging the national telecom operators to lower charges for 2G services, on the basis that costs are higher than in other Asian countries – notably China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.
Apparently calls are cheapest in Hong Kong, and Japan is the highest. Interestingly, the survey also turned up that Taiwan and Hong Kong have mobile device usage rates above 100%!
One of the factors that might cloud this seeminly simple request however, is that Taiwan only charges the caller, whereas in Hong Kong, callers and receivers both pay a share of the call.
Whether anything will come of the request it’s hard to tell, but the fact that in many countries there are groups lobbying for the reduction of charges, shows that people are aware of significant personal outgoings in this time of reduced economic prosperity.
