New LG Agreement Allows Carriers to Lock Down Memory Cards

cellphone lock New LG Agreement Allows Carriers to Lock Down Memory CardsLet’s hear it for DRM! Yay! … No? Didn’t think so. A new deal between LG and SanDisk will give network operators more control over preloaded content so that it’s only accessible on their handsets through IP-based confirmation – no swapping memory cards for access elsewhere. Boo. On the one hand, this kind of sucks for end-users who think they’re getting free music with their phone, but on the other, the limits might open up possibilities for artists interested in striking a deal but seek control of their work; it’s a breadth versus depth issue. No word on which (if any) carriers will take up LG on the offer, but it might not take SanDisk long to hit up other manufacturers for similar arrangements.
