iPhone Dev Team cracks iPhone 2.2.1 OS – PwnageTool 2.2.5 jailbreaks iPhone and iPhone 3G!

Well, there you have it, folks. It took the iPhone Dev Team no more than a few days to crack the new iPhone 2.2.1 OS. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) went official with their new iPhone 2.2.1 OS firmware update for iPhone and iPhone 3G users just a few days ago, and The Team has already managed to jailbreak the new iPhone 2.2.1 OS!
The iPhone Dev Team has released an updated version of their iPhone jailbreak application, dubbed Pwnage Tool. With PwnageTool 2.2.5, just about any tech-savvy (and even not-so tech-savvy) iPhone owner can break their precious handset out of file-system “jail.” Quick recap for those of you still wondering what the “jailbreak” does – (1) it is NOT an unlock solution, a jailbroken iPhone cannot be used on foreign GSM networks by virtue of the jailbreak alone, (2) it IS a way for you to interact with your iPhone’s filesystem, which allows you to install unofficial software such as the iPhone unlock software called “yellowsn0w.” (more on that here)
iPhone 3G owners looking forward to one day unlocking the handset for use with foreign GSM carriers should take note – the new iPhone 2.2.1 OS bundles with it a new baseband firmware (modem firmware). The new v.02.30.03 baseband firmware is wholly incompatible with the “yellowsn0w” unlock utility that was recently released by the iPhone Dev Team. Updating your iPhone 3G to a non-jailbroken iPhone 2.2.1 OS will flash your iPhone 3G’s baseband with the new firmware, essentially killing any hope of unlocking the GSM radio for use elsewhere.
If you could care less about unlocking your iPhone 3G, you’re more than welcome to update to iPhone 2.2.1 OS anyway you see fit (iTunes, QuickPWN, PwnageTool). But, if you have even the slightest urge to free (unlock) your iPhone 3G’s GSM radio to surf any GSM network in the world, you’ll want to heed the iPhone Dev Team’s warning and update to iPhone 2.2.1 OS using ONLY Pwnage Tool 2.2.5. — (PwnageTool creates a custom iPhone 2.2.1 OS restore file (the .ipsw file) by opening up the firmware package and replacing the newer 02.30.03 baseband code with the older 02.28.00 baseband code that works with the “yellowsn0w” unlock utility)

I was careless enough of having updated to 2.2.1 with iTune, and lost all of my cyndia applications already, how do i jailbreak again? please help…
I have jailbroken my phone (now it’s with the 2.2.1 firmware). I can use it now (surf the net through Safari because of wireless networks and so forth), but not have it read my sim card from the other GSM carrier.
Is this phone able to be unlocked, or will it be awhile before someone is able to unlock it?
If it cannot be unlocked…what do I do?
What is the purpose of haveing PwnageTool 2.2.5? It only comes for Macs, but most users are using Windows. There needs to be a Windows version?
When iPhone updates the firmware again, will PwnageTool 2.2.5 work are will the whole process start all over again?

Probably you heard this questions a thousand times, but: I upgraded my Iphone with 2.2.1 in iTunes=( And now want to update
it with Pwnage in order to unlock it again. Now i cant use any function of the phone…Everything is kind of not working anymore
and dont know what to do!?
So: when can I await for the new unlock file for 2.2.1 or is there a way to downgrade the phone again or upgrade 2.2.1 with Pwnage,

Hello – exactly the same thing happened to me; got a brand new unlocked iphone 3g 16gb and thanks to upgrading to 2.2.1 I was left with a rather costly brick.
Despite trying virtually everything, nothing worked apart from purchasing a 2.2.1 rebel no cut sim (I got mine on eBay) and putting in the iphone alongside the sim.
Frustrating but after 3 weeks of pulling out hair, I’ve now got a full working iphone.

I’ve updated my iphone 3g to 2.2.1 some days ago because a failure with an app that I installed. Anyway I’ve download the last Pwagane tools from this web page. I have tried to jailbreak it and everythings works well untill iTunes wants to recognice it from DTL status: allways show the following warning: error 2001. I’ve tried to updating it by browsing the pwgane created file and says error 21.

I have been (or HAD been) thinking about updating my iPhone to version 2.2.1 to put the Facebook application on my phone. But after seeing all this, I have decided not to. But I am wondering, does being “locked” on the iPhone not allow it to be a phone anymore? No receiving calls? And is there any way to put facebook on the iphone without having that version? Because I have the 2g, and it is not downloading the application on my phone. I am glad I checked here first, or I could have been locked out too! But I don’t quite understand the whole “locked-out” thing….explain please?

I am having a problem with my iphone 3G, firmware 2.2.1, I have jailbroken it and installed winterboard, but after downloading some themes…the springboard crushed and required that I restart the springboard or re-boot, I did all these but it remains the same; with a grey background and writing that its running on ’safe-mode’. I then went to general settings and RESET SETTINGS, thats when it restart with a fine springboard, but with no theme activated, the moment I activate any theme or just anything in my winterboard…the springboard crushes again. I have restored it, jailbroken again…downloaded some themes…and now its happening again. why do my winterboard themes crush my springboard? please help
If you have a 2g u can update all you want it will not stop anything 2g is the least of apples concerns however a 3g cannot be software unlocked if u upgraded to 2.2.1 but you can unlock 2.2.1 if you buy the right turbo sim,I have a 2.30.03 baseband 2.2.1 3g and am using a turbo sim and have no problems.
I bought the iphone 3g with version 2.2.1 (5H11) with modem firmware 02.30.03 i just want to get cydia onto my phone. the catch is that i have a chip so that i can use my tmobile service with it.
Intailly my iphone was unlocked and was working fine.When I selected ‘Erase all contents and settings’ in the reset option, OS got corrupted. I was only able to see apple logo during start up. Then I restored with version 2.2.1(5H11) with modem firmware 02.30.03.
now when I try to restore the iphone with iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw it shows an unknown error 1013. Is there anyway out to avoid this error?

i had to have my iphone 3g replaced and i had my original one pwned and it worked fine, now, i cannot actually “recover” the newly created software. I keep getting the message that an unknown error occured and it cannot recover the software. what do i do? i cannot jailbreak this phone for some reason… i am using 2.5.5 on 2.2.1… fyi, every time i try to DFU it iTunes opens before it finishes the final step and gives me the first expected error immediately. it’s after this that i cannot do ANYTHING unless i do a reset on the phone in which case it is in recovery mode, but will not accept the software… PLEASE HELP! I just have a small question, i jailbroke the iphone a few times. and most times when i install applications and try to run it, it states “The application xxx cannot be opened”
Although the other time i jailbroke my iphone everything worked out and all programs ran smoothly.
Is there something wrong that i’m doing that causes this?

hello … I followed the whole procedure with quickpwn 2.2.5 but I just hangs at the beauty that is at the end. I left with the apple logo and then nothing more than that from the pc you hear the sound of the iphone connection. I ask you help …. Thank you

Guys, the unlocking of 2.30X is really necessary!
I had a 2.2 with baseband 2.28x and had it running yellowsn0w. All was well and then i updated the firmware to 2.2.1. I kept my baseband at 2.28 so that yellosn0w would run.
I was one of the unlucky ones who’s WIFI packed up after the update. So I sent the iphone back and got a replacement. Guess what, it came back with the latest 2.2.1 firmaware and baseband 2.30x. I’m gutted because I need this phone unlocked, as i’ll be leaving the country with it in a few weeks time. So it looks like my iPhone is useless, now!
