Rogers Set to Update Smartphone Data Plans

Rogers is up to their old tricks again. According to a tipster over at BGR, Rogers (NYSE: RCI) will be updating their lineup of ‘Smartphone Plans’ in the near future. As expected, if you think 500MB of data per month is more than reasonable, then you’ll be just tickled pink with the plans. If you are, however, of the mindset that 500MB might get you through a day or two, then… Get ready to be dissapointed.

The updated plans are rumored to be as follows:

$45 Smartphone Plan

• 250 daytime minutes
• Evenings and weekends at 9pm
• Rogers to Rogers
• 500MB data

$50 Smartphone Plan

• 400 daytime minutes
• Evenings and weekends at 9pm
• Rogers to Rogers
• 500MB data

$75 Smartphone Plan

• 650 daytime minutes
• Evenings and weekends at 9pm
• Rogers to Rogers
• 500MB data

Each of the plans come with a choice of one of the following add-ons: Free incoming calls, my5 Canada-wide, unlimited network calling, or 5pm start to evening and weekend minutes. Come to think of it, I got the my5 when I picked up my iPhone 3G and I haven’t even set it up yet. The ‘welcome’ message/link I received from Rogers when I was getting setup with it didn’t even work… and I haven’t bothered to activate that. Maybe I should get on that

It should be noted that Rogers Wireless does offer iPhone and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) plans which are different than these ‘Smartphone’ packages. However, these plans are extremely expensive as well (at least in comparison to the plans available to our American friends!). So if you want to hop on a BlackBerry, iPhone, or any other smartphone device in Canada, chances are you’re going to pay through the teeth for it. I’m sure Simon can attest to these facts.
