Verizon Wireless adds Trimble Outdoors

Back in December, we wrote that Alltel has started offering the location-aware Trimble Outdoors application for fans of the outdoor activities. Now, Alltel’s new owner, Verizon Wireless, is joining the wave, making the same app/service available to its customers.

The application works on select GPS-capable phones, turning phones into full-featured GPS receivers to be used during outdoor recreational activities. Included in the package are trip planning software, off-road navigation and journaling tools for outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, fishing and hunting.

We won’t go into detail describing what all of the Trimble Outdoors features. If you still haven’t figured out, you can get more details about it from this page. We will add that Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is offering the application for $5.99 for a monthly subscription or $1.99 for one-day use purchase — that’s the price without airtime, data usage and messaging.

Trimble Outdoors is available in the “Media Center” or “Get It Now,” in the “Browse & Download” section under the “Download This!” and “Sports” categories. The application works on more than two dozen Verizon phones, including rugged Verizon Wireless G’zOne Type-S and G’zOne Boulder, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Adventure V750, as well as popular phones such as the LG Decoy and Samsung SCH-u550.
