Apple’s iPhone Dominating Mobile Web Traffic

By James Falconer on Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 8:21 AM PST In Apple, Mobile Web, iPhone

You can come up with numbers to show anything you want, really… 62% of people know that. But one metric has just come out that is very interesting.

According to the folks over at AdMob (a very large, one of the largest mobile web ad networks), they have reported that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s iPhone are clearly dominating mobile web traffic… In almost all categories. Honestly that’s not too surprising. Browsing with Safari on the iPhone 3G is a joy in comparison to some other handsets out there.

More details according to AdMob:

  • The iPhone OS now represents 51% of U.S. smartphone traffic, leaving RIM’s BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) (19%) and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s Windows Mobile (14%) in the dust.
  • In the global handset market, the iPhone and iPod touch now represent 18.3% of worldwide ad traffic – second only to Nokia (NYSE: NOK) with 30.1%
  • Worldwide requests from Apple devices grew 28% month over month to 1.2 billion in January.
  • The iPod touch is rapidly catching up to the iPhone; it now represents 40% of Apple requests, up from 20% in September.

Take those numbers for what they’re worth. Interesting stuff at the very least… and not that surprising.

Pointless stat – most phones automatically link to mobile sites which obviously don’t support ads.
