After taking a video call with Steve Ballmer on their new Watch Phone, it’s clear LG is pretty chummy with Microsoft – so much so that it wouldn’t be a stretch if they got dibs on the latest update to Windows Mobile on their new LG-GM730. The press release is hazy on the subject, likely because the Microsoft event announcing 6.5 was right after LG, but “first smartphone to use new version of Windows Mobile OS” is telling enough. The GM730 will be running S-Class 3D like the Arena, only overlayed onto the Windows Mobile infrastructure. A few of the specifications include:
- HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HUSPA 2.0 Mbps
- UMTS 900/2100, 850/900/1800/1900
- 110 x 56.5 x 11.9mm
Keep an eye out for this one in the first half of 2009.

In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement.
With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer. At IntoMobile, you can count on his posts being even-handed, well-informed and thought-out.
