Vodafone Portugal testing HSPA+ 64QAM

More HSPA news…. this time with Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) Portugal.
Using something called HSPA+ 64QAM technology, testing has been carried out to see what data rates are possible, in a real-world environment, compared to the theoretical max. of 21.6Mbps (yes, you did read that right!). The actual speed attained was about 16Mbps per second, and would be (most likely) 8x faster (comparing peak with peak) than my home broadband (which is getting beyond a joke, but that’s a whole other rant for another post!)
Apparently Vodafone Portugal will launch HSPA+ in 2009, once the next-gen devices are available. If that isn’t enough, by extending the HSPA+ 64QAM with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) tech, the theoretical max. rises to 28.8Mbps.
What frightens me is that I am old enough to remember when fixed line dialer modems were sold that ran at 28.8Kbps! What a crazy world we live in….
