Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) is evaluating the possibility to start making TD-SCDMA handsets for the Chinese market.

According to Carl-Henric Svanberg, president and CEO of Ericsson who also serves as a director at Sony Ericsson, it is expected that 3G handsets will see an increase in sales now that the government has released 3G licenses.

Apparently, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) — the country’s leading mobile operator — has already held talks with the Swedish-Japanese handset maker for the possible purchase of TD-SCDMA phones, the Chinese-language Commercial Times reported.

The way I see it, now that LG has pushed Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Sony Ericsson to the 4th and 5th place, respectively, entering the Chinese market seems like a logical move. After all, aside from India, there are not that many mobile phone markets growing as fast as China. Sony Ericsson certainly has all the right skills to make decent phones and Ericcson has the technology needed, so why wait?
