Meh, it's still a huge hassle. I tried for a while, but instead of struggling with it, I just sold my iPhone and picked up an unlocked G1. It used to be the case that when you bought an Apple product, it was the easiest one to use, but the iPhone has been nothing but a hassle. The G1 has been a lot easier to use, it has more actually useful applications available for it, and I can easily use it with Linux.
