Businessmen Want that Mobile Video when they are travelling!

By Ben Robinson on Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at 3:01 PM PST In Research, The Digital Life

Ericsson and CNN have conducted a consumer “behaviour study” (whatever one of them is….), which shows that top execs are accessing content more and more whilst on the move, and sharing UGC (user-generated content).

Interestingly, the survey showed that 56% of people with mobile InterWeb access use it whilst on the move. 73% apparently share UGC video content, with a high proportion of older users in there too! Obviously for CNN this is a big thing because the face and shape of news is changing, and it’s more important than ever to understand the trends of potential ‘citizen journalists’.

In further waves of the stat attack, it was found that 23% of respondents have increased their viewing of content on Mobile devices in the last few years, and there was clear indications of what type of content – a genre that is increasingly being called “catch-up TV” (the stuff you might have missed whilst out and about!). For those catching up on TV on a non-traditional telly-viewer, the broadcaster websites is apparently the most commonly browsed-to destinations (big shout outs to sites like CNN and BBC I’d expect there….!).

Overall then, some interesting trends being drawn out – particularly for me the fact that broadcaster sites are so popular is a fascinating one – meaning that despite many industry commentator criticisms, they are shifting their modes of operation to include new viewing types. They’ve just got to keep that ball rolling the Mobile space now! :-)

Social media is highly conversational. I recently came across two companies– GeniusRocket and xLNTads– that take advantage of crowd sourcing to develop user generated content for a company or organization. With the help of “tweeting,” Facebook, and other platforms, user generated content allows individuals to power the message. Spread those videos, businessmen! Great article.
