The iPhone helped reshape the way consumers view their handsets, but it also changed the way manufacturers are looking at the mobile space. It’s no longer good enough to have some bang-wizz hardware mated to some funky-cool user interface. No, these days, manufacturers have to offer more value and integration with multimedia services in order to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive mobile market. So, to help bring its mobile lineup up to speed with the likes of Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), Samsung will be launching its new movie download service for mobile phones in Europe.
The aptly-named Samsung Movies store should make for some great mobile movie watching on Samsung’s upcoming OLED-equipped handsets. With richer colors and darker blacks, OLED displays are perfect for watching crisp video, and should give the Samsung Movies store a good running start.
The Samsung Movies service will be going live in the UK and Germany, and will offer cellphone users the option to rent a movie for 24 hours or buy the movie outright. Samsung is looking to have 2,000 movies and TV shows available for download from Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal and Momentum Pictures. Movie downloads start at £2.49 ($3.60) to rent and £4.99 ($7.22) to buy.
