Cable provider Cox prepping own wireless network

With telcos offering internet and television service and cable TV providers getting into the home-phone and internet service game, the lines between different wired and wireless networks will become more muddled. Case in point, sixth-largest US cable provider Cox Communications is preparing to launch their very own wireless network. Cox is looking to branch out and compete with the likes of AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless, offering both pre- and post-paid wireless service in the South and Southwest US regions.
Cox will offers its customers national roaming through agreements setup with other carriers throughout the US. Details regarding whether the Cox wireless network will launch as a 3G or 4G network aren’t yet clear, but we do know that Cox wants to provide mobile broadband services like mobile and on-demand TV to cellphones. And, the soon-to-be wireless carrier will also be looking to launch an AppStore-like mobile applications store.
The wireless network will be rolled out using the $2.4 billion swath of frequency spectrum that Cox purchased back in 2006. The move should give Cox the power to compete as a television, broadband and wireless provider.
