bluetooth wireless technology Bluetooth 3.0 going official April 21!Looks like T-Mobile (NYSE: DT)’s going to be competing for press coverage on April 21. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is ready to go live with their 802.11-based Bluetooth 3.0 specification on April 21.

The new Bluetooth 3.0 spec touts faster, more reliable data transfers that will have us all transferring entire music libraries and DVD movies in seconds. Compared to the current Bluetooth specification, the up-rated data transfer speeds are expected to redefine the way we use Bluetooth connections. Bluetooth 3.0 will use Bluetooth technology to handle all the device pairing duties, switching to the 802.11 (WiFi) protocol for large file transfers. Of course, that means both paired devices need to have integrated 802.11 WiFi radios in order to take advantage of Bluetooth 3.0’s faster file transfer speeds. Otherwise, file transfers will be handled the good old-fashioned way – over Bluetooth.

Bluetooth 3.0 will also feature a new technology called Enhanced Power Control (EPC), which will help prevent accidental device disconnects caused by placing the device in a pocket or purse. We’re not sure how it does it, but we’d be willing to bet that EPC dynamically boosts power when a paired device goes weak on signal strength.

Look for more details on April 21.
