Apparently, Palm Pre training is beginning for Sprint sales reps this month, in line with the latest rumours of a mid-April launch. For everyone griping about the supposed $300 price point, the internal memo states the pricing has not yet been determined. There are more communications to come regarding the Pre, and since this one was likely pulled from a regular product update, we can expect more tidbits make its way to the blogosphere in the weeks leading up to the launch. Sprint was showing off lots of software working on the Pre at CTIA, we have yet to see any glaring performance issues, and folks are getting pretty antsy to pick up this smartphone; maybe it’s a good time for Palm to get the Pre out the door.

What is it with blogs/e-zines constantly injecting the internet with articles whose titles end in a “?”? You people obviously have nothing to do but hamper the clarity yearned for in the idea of surfing (to find valuable, digestible, real information) by constantly writing and rewriting on speculative data. You feed off of rumors and continue the trend. That isn’t journalism because it isn’t news. How about this? Wait for news to happen, such as the Palm Pre actually being given a real release date (e.g. 6/30/2009), and then write about it. It’s expected to release 2Q of 2009, so any release date that is after the end of 2Q would be the only news to write about. People don’t need to be rushed into the idea of when to expect a phone. There will be plenty available. Stop it with the speculation already! I read more articles about “specific” release dates or rumors when looking for information on devices’ capabilities than actually finding the information I’m looking for.

The reason we post about speculative information is because it is the newest available – the alternative is to have no information whatsoever for those who do want to know. You’re right, that ideally those searching would be provided a clear-cut release date when it’s available, but when it’s not, most folks will be happy to have a good guess.

As for the question mark in the titles, that’s actually to set the proper tone for such speculation. Without it, folks are, as you say, rushed into the idea of when to expect a phone. With it, along with the Rumor category, we make it clear that this information is not locked down and subject to change.

Finally, we aren’t journalists, and we don’t pretend to be. :)
