Downgrade your iPhone 3G baseband from 2.30 to 2.28!
By Will Park on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 at 6:33 PM PST In Announcements, Apple, Applications, Developer, iPhone, iPhone OS
They did it! No, it wasn’t the venerated iPhone Dev Team that figured it out. The folks at ModMyi have posted an iPhone 3G baseband firmware downgrade utility, developed by “pH,” that should give bricked iPhone 3G owners new hope. Thanks to pH and the “pHasebandowngrader” utility, the iPhone 3G baseband firmware version 2.30 can now be downgraded to the more unlock-friendly 2.28 baseband firmware! But only if you’re running bootloader 5.80…
But, why would you want to downgrade your iPhone 3G’s baseband? Because the newer 2.30 version of the iPhone 3G modem firmware (baseband) will not work with the only true software-based SIM unlock utility, known as “yellowsn0w.” The iPhone Dev Team’s iPhone 3G unlocking utility can liberate many iPhone 3Gs to work on any GSM network in the world, but will only work an iPhone 3G running baseband version 2.28.
To downgrade your iPhone 3G’s 2.30 baseband:
- Download pHasebandowngrader here.
- Download to Desktop
- Connect via SSH to your iPhone
- Open MobileTerminal
- Type “login”
- Default login/pass is root/alpine
- Copy the downloaded “phasebandowngrader” folder to your iPhone’s “Applications” folder
- The folder MUST named phasebandowngrader with lowercase letters!
- Type “cd / Applications/phasebandowngrader/”
- Execute pHasbandowngrader
- Type “./phasebandowngrader”
- You should now be running iPhone baseband 2.30!
More complete instructions and warnings can be found in this MMI thread.
The pHasbandowngrader is only intended to be used on iPhone 3Gs that were accidentally flashed to the latest 2.30 baseband firmware. Those same users that are now looking to unlock their iPhone 3G to roam the globe can now downgrade their baseband and run the yellowsn0w utility (available from Cydia). Unfortunately, most newer iPhone 3G units have upgraded bootloaders that prevent baseband downgrades. So, if you recently bought your iPhone 3G, thinking you could unlock it for use overseas, you’re out of luck. Sorry.
But, if you’ve been waiting for the day when you would finally be allowed to downgrade to 2.28 and use yellowsn0w, consider this your lucky day!
Warning: pHasbandowngrader has only been tested with baseband 2.30 and commercially available iPhone OS versions. iPhone Devs out there that have updated to iPhone OS 3.0 will be testing pHasbandowngrader at their own risk

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=3583
check diz out!
it does work, tested ,with only bootloader 5.8 and 5.9 to 6.2 will hav to wait
my bootloader 5.8 but when i type su on it it’s wont run
i read someware that they are working on at downgrader for 5.9. But we have to se!
Any news on the downgrader for bootloader 5.9. Dev team pls save us
Finaly dev team did it and have software to unlock 2.2.1 with out downgrading baseband nor bootloader
hi, i accidentally updated my firmware to 2.2.1 and even the baseband got updated to 2.30.03. my bootloader version is 5.09. i was able to jail break my iphone but am having some trouble to unlock it. is there anyway i can unlock my phone without using those hardware chips….
plz plz reply….
i would really appreciate your suggestion…
Is that true that devteam has released the unlock software for latest version? please tell me where can i get it!!
As of now 3G is unlockable with yellowsnoe IF 2.28 and 2.30, BUT if you are running 2.30 you have to either upgrade from 2.28 to 2.30 preserving the bootloader 5.8. Otherwize you have to use Ulocking sim for 2.30bb 5.9. and 6.2
still in baseband 2.30 not in 2.28
GOOD NEWS!!
For those of you who, just like me waited SOOO long with a locked IPhone 3G, here’s the solution. No matter your bootloader or your baseband version, follow the steps indicated in the link below :
http://www.sizlopedia.com/2009/06/23/download-ultrasnow-unlock-iphone-3g-on-firmware-30/
Remember, you need to Upgrade the Iphone OS to 3.0 First.
Good Luck and Enjoy!!
First off you should NOT be using this, and Geo-hot and the dev team should be the ones to get credit for discovering the exploit!
The best reason not to use this, is because FuzzyBand is available in Cydia and even works on 3.1 iPhones. (It’s the BEST Downgrader you will find)
Another good reason is because this script pH Created was a fast solution and poorly done. I created a much better script after testing this one before it was released to the public but DHowett and w1kedz were on the same track as me only their script had a very nice gui.
Also DownBB was released before pHasebanddowngrader.
BigBoss had helped to create a GUI version of pH’s script which you can likely still find on CYDIA, but the script is still lacking some important features so I highly advise against its use.
Here is the source of pH’s script.

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
./BBUpdaterExtreme update -f ICE2_02.28.00.fls -e ICE2_02.28.00.eep

First mistake in my opinion was not setting the permissions for BBUpdaterExtreme. (chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme)
The second was not re-enabling the commcenter.
And while I could go on, I see no point as this is a very old post and as I said, USE FUZZYBAND!
It can even upgrade your baseband to 04.26.08 wich is still exploitable.
